We are a reputable financial institution with nationwide branch network looking to recruit committed and hardworking individuals for the following role:- Counsel
Main Purpose of Role
Provide legal services / advice to the Bank and to ensure that asset of the Bank are adequately protected legally in all its transactions.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide legal advice / opinion of management and business units / departments
• Draft and review Agreements e.g. tenancy, international loans, money transfers, etc.
• Review titles, draft recitals and ensure appropriate legal processes and forms are completed regarding all security documentation e.g. mortgages debentures, etc.
• Provide guidance and advice the bank on matters of ethics and good governance
• Co-ordinate the Banks approach towards litigation and other proceedings
• Manage external solicitors throughout the litigation process to ensure appropriate and quick service is provided to the Bank and that recoveries are optimized with minimum legal costs.
• Contribute to the formulation of reviews of monthly reports from external solicitors with a view to monitoring and providing quick response
• Liaise with external solicitors regarding legal action
• Manage the legal aspects of credit administration, monitoring and recoveries
• Liaise with Credit Risk Management to prepare and review agreements in respect of Customers facilities
• Monitor the activities of the Recoveries Unit to maximize recoveries arising from emergent and identified bad & doubtful debts
• Provide legal advice on Labour related issues including labour contract / negotiations
Qualification Required & Experience
• A recognized University degree in Law (LLB) and Barrister at Law (BL)
• A minimum of ten (10) years of post-call relevant working experience
• Three (3) years should have been served in a managerial position in a reputable organisation
Skills and Knowledge
• Considerable knowledge in Court rules and procedures
• Good knowledge and understanding of Banking operations and practice
• Current with case law with particular reference to banking and labour laws / practices
• In-depth knowledge of Corporate Law and Company Secretarial Practice
• Excellent legal drafting skills
• Good analytical and deductive skills
• Good negotiation and networking skills
• Excellent report writing, verbal communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work on own initiative and have excellent organizational skills
• IT experience, including the use of word, excel and project management software.
