The African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) (hereinafter referred to as “the Organisation”), an Intergovernmental Organisation, which was established at Lusaka, Zambia, in 1976 by an Agreement concluded under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

The Organisation was created, inter alia, to promote the development of intellectual property laws appropriate to the needs of its members, establish common services and training schemes, and assist its members in the acquisition and development of technology and the evolving of common views on intellectual property matters.

The Organisation grants and administers Intellectual Property titles on behalf of the member states and provides Intellectual Property information to its clientele in the form of search services, publications and awareness creation. Membership of the Organisation is open to all states members of the African Union (AU) or of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

The present members of the Organisation are: Botswana, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. (Total: 19 states)

The organs of the Organisation are:

•   The Council of Ministers, consisting of ministers who are responsible in the Member States for the administration of intellectual property matters;
•   The administrative Council consisting of heads of offices, in the member States, dealing with the administration of intellectual property; and
•   The Secretariat (the Office of ARIPO) headed by the Director General as the principal executive officer of the Organisation

Job Description

•   Duty Station: Harare, Zimbabwe
•   Duration of Appointment: Fixed-term contract of two years (renewable)
•   Scheduled Date of Entry on Duty: To be determined

Principal Duties
Under the supervision of the Director General, the incumbent Patent Examiner shall have the following tasks;

•   Classify search and examine ARIPO industrial property applications, in particular patent applications for grant in the fields of Mechanical Engineering;
•   Classify, search and examine patent applications and search requests from member countries in the field of Mechanical Engineering;
•   Undertake missions and awareness promotion on behalf of the Organisation;
•   Develop, study and comment on proposals in the field of Mechanical Engineering;
•   Performing other related tasks as will be assigned from time to time.
•   Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Director Industrial Property.

Conditions of Employment:

•   Conditions of service shall be subject to the ARIPO Staff Rules and Procedures or be determined by the Administrative Council of the Organisation
•   Salary and allowance on first appointment shall be those applicable to Grade L-3 STEP 1 of the ARIPO salary scales of the profession category.

Base Salary: US$39,150 per annum

Post Adjustment Allowance: Depending on the rise and fall, in value, of the United States dollar, a post adjustment index which is presently 52.4% of base salary is applied as a cost of living allowance.
Dependency Allowances: US$900 per year for a dependent child. Maximum number of children (3).

Other conditions include:

•   Payment of travel and removal expenses
•   Once off Installation grant
•   Education grant up to a maximum of three children
•   Housing allowance
•   Contributory medical insurance scheme
•   Annual leave of 30 working days
•   Paid home leave every two years

Medical Examination: The appointment is subject to a satisfactory United Nations type medical examination

Other Conditions of Service: Other terms and conditions of service shall be subject to the ARIPO Staff Rules and Procedures or be determined by the Administrative Council of the Organisation.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   A master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
•   Good computer knowledge particularly in database management;
•   A minimum of 3 years working experience
•   Ability to work under minimum supervision
•   Ability to work as a member of a team
•   Good analytical skills

Nationality

•   To be eligible for appointment, candidates must be nationals of a Member State of the Organisation

Qualification Required & Experience

•   A minimum of a degree (BSc.) in Engineering.
•   A minimum of three (3) years experience in a similar position in a reputable company.
•   ISO auditor certification will be an advantage
•   Must possess a Valid Driver’s license and have the ability to drive over long distances.

Job Summary

The Geotechnical Engineer will undertake preliminary geotechnical activities within all operational areas.

Key Responsibilities:

•   Implement and maintain safety, health and environmental policies and procedures, and ensure to maintain a healthy working environment;
•   Keep and update plans, sections of pits slopes and respective hydrological regimes within and around the pit and other operational areas;
•   Supervise in-pit & ex-pit hydrological situations and consequently advice on the location of sumps, ditches and drainage berms;
•   Supervision of dewatering crew, oversee the effective performance and coordinate the servicing, maintenance of pumping machines and the supply of other logistics;
•   Supervise the installation of piezometers in ex-pits boreholes and on tailings embankment;
•   Plan and supervise drilling during geotechnical investigation for open pit and civil design;
•   Monitoring, analyzing, and predicting the stability of pit walls for safer operations to save cost, and Implement geotechnical hazard plan;
•   Update Geotechnical database to provide accurate reports;
•   Recommend to pit superintendent and Mining Engineers with respect to pit wall stability as required for open pit designs;
•   Monitor drill and activities that impact on the integrity of final pit walls, and advice on weaker grounds where drilling and blasting could be minimized to save cost;
•   Undertake Geotechnical and Geological mapping using the scan line method;
•   Kinematic analysis of structural data to determine possible failure types in slopes using Dips 5.0, Slide 5.0;
•   Identifies learning needs of immediate team members and organizes or recommends appropriate training; and
•   Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   BSc Degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering
•   Minimum of 5 years working experience in an open pit mine.
•   Previous work experience using 3D modeling software or similar software package required;
•   Generation of Geological and Geotechnical 3D models from data obtained from the field using 3D geotechnical software;
•   Computer literacy in geotechnical and mining software such as, Dips 5.0, slides 5.0, Surpac and MapInfo is required;
•   Ability to work under pressure with little supervision;
•   Good communication, interpersonal and written skills;
•   A strong commitment to working in a safe, socially responsible manner;
•   Self-confidence and personal drive in supervising subordinates;
•   Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, organisational, technical and analytical skills;
•   Must be a strong team player.

ROLE PROFILE

RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES

•   Deliver SHE&S Plan for the West Africa Region including Action Management and the Audit Plan
•   Generation of monthly production volume and KPI reports
•   Continuous inventory optimisation an overall cost reduction
•   Generation of effective budgets and continuous monitoring thereof
•   Sales and Operations planning process implementation and delivery
•   Support business growth in West Africa
•   Implementation of new customer-focused product formulations ( and types) in conjunction with Research and Development (R&D ) team
•   Direct government agency liaison to facilitate ease of customer and company’s operations
•   Support of other EMEA operations in the form of information sharing and audit provision
•   Work with local communities (in conjunction with clients) to facilitate community knowledge and the acceptance of West Africa Region operations.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Bachelor’s degree in science (Chemical, Mechanical or Mining Engineering)

EXPERIENCE

•   At least 10 years’ experience in the explosives production environment
•   Underground and open cast mining experience
•   Minimum 2 years’ experience in operations management
