Job Vacancy For Transcriptionist / Translator At Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) – Accra and Tamale

Job Summary

IPA seeks a Transcriptionist/Translator for immediate hire on 1 month contract, who will assist with translating and transcribing of Focus Group Discussion audios and In-depth Interviews for the African Health Markets for Equity (AHME) Qualitative Evaluation.

The research project will collect data from small health facilities and households in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions to measure the health impacts of improving the delivery and quality of private healthcare services.

The intervention is two-fold, and aims to impact health outcomes through both the supply of services, and the demand for them. This position is temporary and will be based in Accra and will require extensive travel within and across the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Transcriptionist/Translator will work closely with both international and local researchers and other field staff to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

Data Transcription

•   Check translations of technical and/or medical terms from Twi terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions into English language;
•   Listen to original recording material in Twi and type out Focus Group Discussion and In-Depth Interview texts in English to ensure that translations from the Twi language retain the content and meaning of the original material;
•   Proofread to correct spelling mistakes and grammar in English;
•   Accurately relay style or tone so that meaning remains the same when translating or interpreting from Twi to English language;
•   Adhere to strict deadlines when dealing with translating written material;
•   Protect the confidentiality of material as required.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   A diploma or University degree in related field of Ghanaian language (Twi) and English language is an advantage
•   Strong oral and written communications skills in English
•   Strong oral proficiency in Twi is required
•   Knowledge of additional languages used in Greater Accra and Ashanti regions is an advantage
•   Listening ability to understand and grasp various expressions, idioms and specific vocabulary and their uses.
•   Should have basic knowledge in Twi grammar and English.
•   Experience in Transcription at least 1 year is preferred
•   Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word and excellent typing skills is required for this position

Willing to work evenings if needed and willing to travel to sites if required

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Moderator will work closely with both international and local researchers and other field staff to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

•   Work with community leaders and clinic providers to identify and recruit interview and focus group discussion participants from local communities and clinics
•   Screen participants for eligibility and ensure informed consent process is thoroughly conducted for all participants
•   Conduct in-depth interviews with clinic staff and patients
•   Direct FGD discussions
1) Draw participants out and encouraging people to speak during the discussion
2) Moderate dominant participants or people making inappropriate comments without disrupting the group
3) Take minimal notes during interviews Handle environmental conditions, and respond to unexpected interruptions
4) Record the discussion
5) Follow-up on comments made by respondents that need clarification
6) Make the group of participants feel comfortable and safe
7) Have a good understanding of the subject matter for discussion
•   Assist in organizing the FGD, i.e. logistics planning, identify locations, advance contact with participants etc.
•   Debrief with team after interview or focus group sessions
•   Provide suggestions for improving guides and interviewing techniques

Qualification Required & Experience

•   A Diploma or University degree in Social Sciences or related field of discipline is an added advantage
•   Must  be a careful listener that will guide the discussion
•   Complete knowledge of both source (English) and target (Twi) language
•   Ability to understand various expressions
•   Excellent verbal communication in both English and Twi is desired
•   Able to refrain from making comments or suggestions that will bias the conversations
•   Preferred previous experience conducting qualitative research interviews
•   Preferred previous experience working with poor communities and women

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The Technical Advisor is responsible for:

•   Supporting the Programme for Sustainable Economic Development (PSED) project on micro insurance in providing technical assistance to the insurance industry in Ghana
•   Supporting management towards the achievement of project goals and team agreements in consultations with the Project Manager and the Head of Programme
•   Assist the project manager to deliver the agreed measures with partners. In particular, he/she will be responsible for the Area of Cooperation “Research & Development” which includes measures such as the establishment of an insurance information bureau/risk data repository, the implementation of field surveys and the development of tools and trainings on microinsurance
•   Support the implementation of activities in the other project cooperation areas (Regulation and Supervision, Technical Capacity and Insurance Awareness)
•   Assist in the preparation of reports and the presentation of materials to partners
•   Co-operate with and ensure regular contacts, dialogues with partners in the insurance industry
•   Assist in the compilation of information and documents regarding the project to ensure knowledge transfer
•   Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management

Qualification Required & Experience

Qualifications and Competencies:
Formal Education

•   A master’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Insurance, Actuarial Science or Social Science

Professional Experience:

•   Have at least two years of working experience in a research institution and/or the insurance industry and/or development cooperation with a focus on financial sector development in Ghana

Other Knowledge, Additional Competence:

•   Excellent command of MS-Office
•   Command of statistical software is a plus
•   Good working knowledge of modern telecommunication systems
•   Excellent command of the English language and at least one local language
•   Good communication skills
