Overall Purpose of Job:

•   Our teachers are expected to secure success through setting high quality academic standards, and a commitment to student development and care. They will be crucial in helping our school develop a culture that promotes inspired teaching and outstanding learning experiences. They are also expected to take a role in the development and use of existing and emerging learning resources to ensure the continuous improvement of the learning experience and outcomes for pupils; and continuously monitor, evaluate and review the academic performance of the pupils and take any and all action necessary to achieve successful outcomes. As most pupils are expected to go on to top universities in Africa and abroad, the post holder will be required to demonstrate strong academic knowledge up to, and beyond, ‘A’ Level Further Mathematics or ‘A’ Level Physics.

The successful applicant will help play a role in the design of school curriculum and school day.

We are looking for an outstanding individual who clearly demonstrates that they:

•   possess the skills, vision and ability to inspire and enthuse all pupils;
•   lead by example and have the ability to motivate and develop pupils to reach their full potential, and;
•   are an excellent communicator who can engage effectively with students and parents.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

•   Whilst it is impossible to detail every job involved in working at the African Science Academy, below is a representation of what is involved:

Teaching

•   Plan and prepare lessons carefully;
•   Make sure that preps. are set regularly (not too little and not too much) and that they are promptly and thoroughly marked;
•   Ensure that the curriculum promotes the vision and aims of the school;
•   Create an environment which secures effective learning across the breadth of the curriculum and to promote high standards of achievement, behaviour, discipline and attendance;
•   Manage and organise relevant groupings of pupils to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place and that pupil’s personal development needs are met;
•   Ensure that the curriculum takes into account the richness and diversity of the school’s community;
•   Monitor the quality of pupils’ achievements including the analysis of performance data;
•   Ensure effective assessment procedures, including assessment for learning;
•   Set and mark, collate, and evaluate internal examinations at the request of the Headteacher;
•   Ensure that pupils’ efforts are rewarded; and
•   Cover for absent colleagues as directed.

Administrative

•   Provide information for the writing of references;
•   Ensure that you are aware of and understand the marking procedures and details on assessment and record keeping;
•   Keep up to date with all aspects of curriculum developments, with special reference to the Public Examinations;
•   Ensure that the information produced in report/ratings to parents is detailed, relevant and reflects the term’s work and is specific to that pupil;
•   Ensure that rooms, equipment, wall displays etc., are maintained to a high standard and report defects promptly;
•   Ensure that resources are stored securely;
•   Advise the Headteacher about subject needs;
•   Keep records of all pupils: internal assessment, examinations both internal and external;
•   Encourage and engage in sharing good practice;
•   Participate in the duty rota;
•   Communicate and co-operate with other staff;
•   Attend staff meetings as and when called; and
•   Attend pre-term meetings or induction days.

Involvement in School Community

•   Foster, by example, a spirit of academic enquiry in the school. Read and share books, articles etc. ;
•   Provide inspiration and motivation to the school community;
•   Take responsibility for the development, work and behaviour of all pupils who you teach;
•   Help colleagues and seek advice in cases of disciplinary problems;
•   Help with contributions to parent-teacher meetings, Open Days etc;
•   Support all activities within the School, including extra-curricular activities;
•   Support all school events;
•   Share in evening and weekend duties; and
•   Maintain good discipline within the classroom, the School and its facilities by carrying out the School Policy on: punctuality, respect for others, manners, appearance etc.

Student Welfare

•   Make sure that you are aware of special circumstances affecting pupils; e.g. home background etc. ;
•   Be aware of those pupils who are struggling, experiencing special difficulties, or need stretching etc. and offer appropriate support;
•   Advise pupils at times of option choices and when help is needed for careers, or University choices;
•   Liaise with appropriate pastoral staff when problems involving specific pupils arise;
•   Act as a tutor as and when advised;
•   Safeguard pupils health and safety;
•   Help build a school culture based on the Academies key values and making the, and;
•   school environment welcoming to all students from many different backgrounds.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Bachelor Degree in Mathematics or Physics from a reputable university
•   Fluency in English
•   Teaching experience in the secondary school sector
