Job Summary

The Geotechnical Engineer will undertake preliminary geotechnical activities within all operational areas.

Key Responsibilities:

•   Implement and maintain safety, health and environmental policies and procedures, and ensure to maintain a healthy working environment;
•   Keep and update plans, sections of pits slopes and respective hydrological regimes within and around the pit and other operational areas;
•   Supervise in-pit & ex-pit hydrological situations and consequently advice on the location of sumps, ditches and drainage berms;
•   Supervision of dewatering crew, oversee the effective performance and coordinate the servicing, maintenance of pumping machines and the supply of other logistics;
•   Supervise the installation of piezometers in ex-pits boreholes and on tailings embankment;
•   Plan and supervise drilling during geotechnical investigation for open pit and civil design;
•   Monitoring, analyzing, and predicting the stability of pit walls for safer operations to save cost, and Implement geotechnical hazard plan;
•   Update Geotechnical database to provide accurate reports;
•   Recommend to pit superintendent and Mining Engineers with respect to pit wall stability as required for open pit designs;
•   Monitor drill and activities that impact on the integrity of final pit walls, and advice on weaker grounds where drilling and blasting could be minimized to save cost;
•   Undertake Geotechnical and Geological mapping using the scan line method;
•   Kinematic analysis of structural data to determine possible failure types in slopes using Dips 5.0, Slide 5.0;
•   Identifies learning needs of immediate team members and organizes or recommends appropriate training; and
•   Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   BSc Degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering
•   Minimum of 5 years working experience in an open pit mine.
•   Previous work experience using 3D modeling software or similar software package required;
•   Generation of Geological and Geotechnical 3D models from data obtained from the field using 3D geotechnical software;
•   Computer literacy in geotechnical and mining software such as, Dips 5.0, slides 5.0, Surpac and MapInfo is required;
•   Ability to work under pressure with little supervision;
•   Good communication, interpersonal and written skills;
•   A strong commitment to working in a safe, socially responsible manner;
•   Self-confidence and personal drive in supervising subordinates;
•   Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, organisational, technical and analytical skills;
•   Must be a strong team player.
