Free the Slaves has worked in Ghana for 10 years, and established a formal field office presence in Ghana in late 2013.  The Ghana office works to address child labor slavery, human trafficking and sexual exploitation in informal mining and fishing communities, in collaboration with Ghanaian civil society organizations. Free the Slaves collaborates with and advocates to relevant agencies of the Ghana government to strengthen the government’s ability to respond to modern slavery.  Free the Slaves also collaborates with broader development and human rights organizations to incorporate anti-trafficking efforts into their relevant programs in Ghana. Position Description

Free the Slaves’ Ghana office is hiring a full-time program assistant to provide programmatic and administrative support to an expansion of a pilot project focused on addressing child labor, child slavery, trafficking and sexual exploitation in informal mining communities in Ghana. This position will be based in the new program area of Brong Ahafo region. The field assistant will support the Ghana Country Director to carry out community-based programming in partnership with a Ghanaian civil society organization partner.

Responsibilities

Programmatic

•   Assist Country Director and CSO partner in the development and implementation of work plans and budgets, and ensure timely quarterly reporting from partner
•   In collaboration with FTS Ghana staff, design and carry out needed training to new CSO partner in the FTS child rights program approach and in FTS planning and budgeting templates
•   Support research and evaluation activities, including baseline and follow up assessments
•   Assist CSO partner to adapt and implement FTS monitoring and evaluation tools
•   Support efforts to strengthen the capacity of partner organization and staff
•   Represent FTS in negotiations with government agencies, NGOs and communities
•   Liaise with local community leaders and community organizations, government agencies, business representatives and other stakeholders
•   Provide regular feedback to FTS about program and partner achievements and challenges
•   Draft reports for FTS as needed
•   Review and approve partner quarterly reports and expenditure reports before they are forwarded to Country Director
•   Submit monthly expense reports to Country Director and Finance Officer

Compensation

This position is full time with payment rate commensurate with experience.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Passion for ending modern slavery and child exploitation
•   At least one year of work experience with community-based organizations
•   Strong understanding of community-based approaches to development
•   Degree in relevant field e.g. International Development, Community/Social Work.
•   Good written and spoken English and good spoken Twi and Brong
•   Knowledge of how issues of child labor, child exploitation and human trafficking relate to other development, poverty and human rights issues
•   Ability to work confidently with local government ministries, local NGOs and community leaders to develop collaborative efforts
•   Flexible approach to work, and ability to respond quickly to urgent needs in the field
•   Effective listening, conciliation, bridge-building and inter-personal skills
•   Ability to manage budgets
•   Strong attention to detail
•   Willingness to travel within Ghana
•   Good knowledge of Microsoft Word as well as Excel spreadsheets

Desirable:

•   Experience working for international NGOs.
