JOB PURPOSE

• To build, maintain and implement the bank’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework to identify, assess, mitigate, monitor and report on all significant risks ensuring alignment with the bank’s strategic goals, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements across the region.
• Assist the Board, Group and Regional management to formulate and communicate the Banks’ Risk Management objectives and foster a risk awareness culture in the Region and across the business.
• Ensure sufficient capacity and capabilities are in place with the right skills to manage Risk pro-actively across the region

JOB CONTEXT

• The Regional CRO (AWA) is responsible for leading Risk Management within the AWA region, ensuring the bank operates within approved risk appetite parameter and complies with internal and external policy, procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Management of risk across business operations which entails developing, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure the banks within the region operates within legal and ethical boundaries

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The CRO shall carry out an independent risk management oversight function which shall comprise the following:

• Oversee and direct the bank’s Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework ensuring these remain fit for purpose.
• Formulating and articulating a coherent risk appetite and infrastructure (e.g. people, processes and systems) and Recommend the Bank’s overall risk capacity and appetite as well as tolerance limits.
• Developing, managing, refining and implementing qualitative and quantitative risk policies, frameworks, strategies, metrics and reporting which meets the needs of the Board, Group and stakeholders to support effective decision making at the appropriate level of detail required.
• Establishing, maintaining and operating corporate governance systems and committee structure across affiliates, region
• Implement best practices in the management of risks within the bank.
• Make recommendations to the Board of Directors and Senior Management on the type and level of exposures in each activity segment permitted by policy.
• Advise and recommend to the Board of Directors and Senior Management on all matters relating to risk exposure management. Credibly challenge the management of current issues and the development and implementation of the strategy
• Regulate, monitor, review control procedures and report on matters relating to exposures management and report deviations from set limits and exception to policy to the Board of Directors and Senior Management for their appropriate actions.
• Perform reviews in line with policy or more frequently as required given the operating environment and stress-tests on risk portfolios and at least on a quarterly basis, review and approve the appropriateness of the stresses applied at the business levels
• Incorporate the results of the stress-tests (which will inform management of the expected risk tendency of the portfolio as against the approved risk appetite of the institution) into the risk governance structure of the institution.
• Be empowered where appropriate, to initiate management action to contain the potential risk levels within the approved risk appetite to ensure discipline in the risk management process of the institution.
• Review and approval of Target Market and Portfolio Management Strategy
• To ensure that asset quality is maintained by adherence to Target market and RAC, credit policy.
• Provide a “No Objection” where required by policy for high Credits risk exposures.
• To work with direct reports to ensure the implementation of KPI’s in their various areas and monitoring of these KPI’s and their expected outcome against limits/ risk appetite metrics.
• Work with Remedial Management to ensure good problem loan management and improve recoveries and reduction of NPL stock (Stage 2 and 3 credits).
• Any other job assigned by Managing Director, Board Risk Committee or Group CRO.
• Stay informed of industry trends, emerging risks and best practices in compliance and risk management, incorporating them into the companies’ policies and procedures as appropriate
• Partner effectively with 3rd parties, regulatory bodies and others as appropriate and serve as a role model for high personal and corporate ethical standards of integrity
• Embedding a positive culture of confidence and informed risk taking through training, communication and promotion of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework
• Ensure stress testing, scenario analysis and contingency planning are integrated into management decision making
• Serve as one of the key points of contact with regulators and supervisors ensuring transparency and adherence to local and international regulatory standards.
• Foster a culture of risk awareness and compliance
• Ensure sufficient capacity and capabilities are in place with the right skills to manage Risk pro-actively across the region and business functions
• Develop and implement a people strategy to attract, retain, and develop risk staff across the region including succession planning and manage the Budgets for Risk Management in country and ensure appropriateness for Banks within the Region.

Qualification Required & Experience

Education

• Excellent academic background in a quantitative discipline at the bachelor’s degree level at the minimum.
• Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in a financial institution, part of which must have been spent within the risk management and enterprise risk environment.
• Strong preference for possession of the CFA, FRM or other recognized financial risk management certifications or preparation towards one.
• High level of numeracy and analytical skills.
• Good IT literacy

Experience

Technical/ Industry Specific

• Superior quantitative and analytical skills
• Possess a deep understanding of Treasury businesses and products.
• Familiar with the use of Calypso and SunGard soft wares for market and liquidity risk management
• Familiar with and understands best market risk management practices and methodologies, including Value at Risk (VaR), Earnings at Risk (EaR), Duration, Convexity
• Familiar with the use of complex derivative instruments including Forward, Futures, Swaps and Options
• Interpretation of micro and macro-economic variables and trends and their impact on market and liquidity risk exposures and positions Managerial.
• Strong understanding of Credit, Market, Liquidity and Operational risk as well as Cybersecurity and ESG related risks
• Broad and farsighted view of the unit, organization and its future.
• Ability to analyse the forces at work in a situation, creative and innovative ability to assess the environment and the changes taking place.
• Capacity to organize the members of a team efficiently in order to deliver desired results.
• Strong experience of banking regulations, risk management frameworks and compliance standards
