Summary of Job Functions
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will be expected to:
• Promote, coordinate and facilitate research in KBTH, and lead the implementation of the Hospital's research policy
• Develop an overarching research strategy to drive research in line with global trends and national and institutional priorities
• Serve as primary contact for research, oversee and ensure research in the hospital aligns with KBTH mission and goals
• Implement a comprehensive research capacity development programme to support service delivery
• Provide leadership, supervise and motivate staff to deliver set goals and targets
• To lead and coordinate research activities related to health issues towards development of the hospital and its services
• Conduct research in line with National Health Research Agenda
• Ensure health research Protocols comply with prevailing scientific and ethical standards
• Document and disseminate health research findings for advocacy & policy
• Build and strengthen health Research capacity within KBTH
• Mobilise resources for health research in KBTH
Duties and Responsibilities
• Development and lead effective strategies for fund-raising for research
• Ensure effective distribution and efficient use of research funds in line with KBTH priority areas
• Set standards and ensure effective dissemination of quality research output
• Promote and support development of staff capability and capacity to deliver research
• Develop policies and strategies to facilitate registration, patenting and commercialization of intellectual property and ownership rights
• Coordinate the infrastructure and processes to maintain a robust, functional research ethics and integrity
• Foster research collaborations with external stakeholders and industry partners
• Represent KBTH interests in research contract administration, grant applications and reporting
• Offer technical advice to KBTH Management on research related issues in line with best practice and standards
• Promote research at the hospital with the overarching objective of providing new or improved products, processes and services
• Coordinate research and development activities taking place at KBTH
• Provide stimuli for innovation and help raise KBTH's productivity through indigenous strategies, learning from other institutions and improving existing products / services
• Ensure that the UDS works efficiently and responsive to the challenges of the hospital's operations
• Attract and coordinate research partnerships between KBTH and other collaborators
• Act as a link between the hospital and its research and development partners both nationally and internationally
• Offer technical advice to KBTH's management, Heads of Departments and Units, in partnerships
• Ensure that research projects are carried out in accordance with ethical standards
• Evaluate the progress of research projects to ensure that they are meeting deadlines and milestones
• Coordinate the activities of scientist, engineers and other researchers involved in projects
• Establish relationships with universities, research labs and other organizations that conduct research in areas related to the hospital's interests
• Developing budgets for research projects based on estimates of costs and potential returns
• Review proposals from researchers to determine whether they are suitable for funding
• Conduct research on emerging trends in the health sector to identify new opportunities for growth
• Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Chief Executive Officer
Qualification Required & Experience
• Advanced postgraduate degree in a health-related field (PhD or equivalent).
• Membership of a recognized professional college/body will be an advantage
• Senior health professional with a minimum of 5 years clinical research experience/experience in a management/supervisory position
• Broad based knowledge of health sector policies and operating procedures
• Evidence of leadership and continuing professional development health management, planning, management or public administration
• Knowledge and experience of the health research ecosystem
• Proven evidence of grants awards
• Evidence of publication in high profile journals
• Knowledge and experience in ethics, research and development
• Knowledge and experience of health services quality assurance
• Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Proven training and ability in the performance and management of research
• A broad knowledge base and experience of health sector policies and operating procedures
• Supervisory/team leadership experience
