The U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana is seeking an individual for the position of a Computer Operator/Technician in the Information Systems Center of the Embassy.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

•   Incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of telecommunication systems, installation of new Automated Data Processing (ADP) equipment, modification and maintenance of Department of State Local Area Network (LAN) cabling system and providing hardware support for main terminal stations, intermediate distribution or wiring closets and end-user network equipment.

•   S/he performs maintenance function on Mission computer systems, routine system and LAN maintenance. Conducts networking tests installs and terminates fiber optical cable runs, ensuring that full and clear terminations are made. Assists in laying data cables in roof trays, stair wells and other hazardous/difficult –to- access areas. Diagnoses and solves software, database and LAN problems. Conducts research to find specific information related to vendors, products or pricing to support procurement decisions.

•   Develops, recommends and implements hardware and software configuration changes to improve overall systems performance. S/he keeps accurate maintenance logs and assists in the administration and maintenance of Mission’s telephone and wireless programs, including the installation of new equipment, maintenance and repair of equipment and guidance/assistance to personnel in the proper use of these systems. Incumbent performs full and incremental backups of various systems and monitors network and workstations performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made; diagnoses and solves problems with computer hardware and peripherals; maintains security on the Embassy’s computer networks, IT equipment and software licenses; and provides reports and lists in response to headquarters requests as needed.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Completion of Secondary School and ADP technical training is required.
•   3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in a combination of telecommunication and ADP operations work is required to include at least one year in the operation of a digital computer.
•   Level III (good working knowledge) in English is required. Good working knowledge of the written and spoken language. Job holder will be able to prepare correspondence and standardized reports and communicate with staff and members of the public in the language. Language proficiency will be tested.
•   Good working knowledge of a wide range of hardware peripherals, LAN connectivity concepts, server/PC hardware architecture. Operational knowledge of PCs, LANs and WANs using the latest DOS operating systems is essential. Ability to install software and hardware; able to prepare documents; communicate needs and problems to management when required.
•   Ability to perform hardware setups, operational adjustments, and minor maintenance consistent with failure indicators. Requires tact in educating users the correct ways of operating ADP to avoid continuous breakdown and prolong its life. Ability to maintain and operate network analysis equipment. Good technical skills are required to trouble-shoot, diagnose and resolve computer problems. Good interpersonal skills and Level II typing ability is required. Computer skills will be tested.

Salary: GH¢23,369.00 p.a. (Starting salary)
