The U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana is seeking an individual for the position of a CARPENTER in the Facilities Maintenance Office (FMO) of the Embassy.

POSITION NO: A52618

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

Incumbent serves as the Carpenter in the Facilities Maintenance Section of the Embassy. S/he ensures that all installation, maintenance and repair work in all the mission’s offices, residencies and grounds are done according to specifications. Produces carpentry products and services by following standards and procedures; measures results against standards and makes necessary adjustments. Determines materials, requirements and dimensions of structures or fixtures to be fabricated by studying blue prints, sketches or building plans. Constructs repairs and installs fixtures by making cutting and assemble lines on materials and shaping to measurements using carpenters hand, power tools and ensures construction quality by verifying trueness of structure with plumb bob, carpenters level, and other measurements; maintains a safe and clean environment by complying with all procedures, rules and regulations. Performs other duties as may be assigned by
supervisors.

Qualification Required & Experience

NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with

•   Completion of Secondary, Technical or Vocational or 2-4 years formal apprenticeship program at a recognized institution is required.
•   One to two years experience as a carpenter is required.
•   Level I English required. Limited knowledge of the written and spoken language, and a vocabulary limited to a specific occupation. Job holder will be able to understand and carry out verbal instructions of a repetitive nature, and prepare simple forms or reports. Language proficiency will be tested.
•   Must be knowledgeable in the identification of various wood and their properties. He or she must have good knowledge in wood preservation against the weather elements, insects attack and wear and tear and knowledge of hardware and other materials required giving the desired effect to the specified finished product.
•   Must be able to use power tools required for the work, practice basic safety in workshop and job sites, maintain equipments used on the job and have good customer service skills.
•   Must possess and provide a copy of a valid local driver’s license minimum of Class B.
Driving skills will be tested.

SELECTION PROCESS

When equally qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (AEFMs) and U.S. Veterans will be given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate address the required qualifications above in the application.

ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful candidacy.
2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
3. Current Ordinarily Resident employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.
4. Currently employed US Citizen EFMs who hold FMA appointment are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.
5. Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment, unless currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed
(WAE) work schedule.

Starting Salary: GH¢14,628.00 p.a.
