Job Summary

Jhpiego/Ghana is seeking a qualified, skilled and highly motivated candidate to fill the position of Communication Officer on the USAID-funded Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP). This is a local hire position and international allowances are not available.

Position Overview:

MCSP is working with the Ghana Health Service to improve pre-service education for midwifery and nursing, and to strengthen the management and support systems for community-based health planning and services (CHPS). Reporting to the MCSP Ghana Chief of Party, and working closely with the Country Director and Jhpiego External Relations and Communications (ERCO) Team, the Communication Officer will lead the project’s internal and external communications efforts to raise the profile and visibility of MCSP work to key audiences/stakeholders, including but not limited to the Government of Ghana, donor agencies, policy makers, partner organizations, the media, academic and research institutions and the public. The Communications Officer will be based in Accra, Ghana with field travel, and will support project documentation and communication.

Responsibilities:

•   Develop and implement a communication strategy for MCSP Ghana;
•   Document and coordinate dissemination (through conventional and new media) of user-friendly project information, success stories, photographs, and achievements to relevant stakeholders;
•   Ensure high quality program communication (including but not limited to newsletters, brochures, flyers, ads, promotional videos, slideshows) multi-media material are available to support MCSP internal and external communication efforts;
•   Work closely with the Jhpiego External Relations and Communications (ERCO) Team in Baltimore and Washington to develop accurate, creative story ideas for a variety of media and marketing materials
•   Ensure proper branding and marking of MCSP work, materials and activities;
•   Work with MCSP and Jhpiego Ghana Management to insure that all personnel of MCSP and Jhpiego are familiar with the Communications Manual and processes
•   Support public events management, media coverage and stakeholder engagement

Qualification Required & Experience

•   University graduate (advanced degree preferred) with at least five years’ experience in corporate communications, journalism or marketing, public relations, or public health work
•   Previous experience in the development sector and proven non-technical writing skills is an added advantage
•   Demonstrated organizational and planning skills including the ability to multitask even under pressure of deadlines with minimum supervision;
•   Ability to develop and maintain relationships with audiences important to MCSP and Jhpiego, including news media, legislators, and donors and corporate leaders
•   Ability to represent MCSP and Jhpiego effectively to external audiences including corporate and foundation executives, business and government organizations and other cooperating agencies
•   Excellent computer, writing, analytical, communication, and organization skills
