Worldreader is a global non-profit that uses technology to bring digital books to every child and her family, so they can improve their lives. In its first five years, Worldreader has reached 2.2 million readers in 50 countries with a digital library of 15,000 local and international e-books via e-readers and mobile phones, and plans to reach 15 million readers by 2018.

To accomplish our goals, Worldreader has created a worldwide logistics system, to provide literacy training and support, co-publish books with African and US publishers, measure our results obsessively, report on our progress, and raise money and awareness for our mission. We have an exceptional worldwide team of 50+ staff and volunteers across seven countries and three continents.

Job Description

This new position, part-time (15-20 hours/week) will be responsible for the financial integrity of our West Africa operations including owning daily transactions, bookkeeping, ad hoc reporting, tax payments and audit needs.

Reporting to the Global Senior Finance Manager, the West Africa Accountant will work independently and be responsible for daily bookkeeping activities, financial reporting, and audit for our West Africa office.

As part of a lean finance team, this position will collaborate with three other staff members in the US and Spain. The position will also work regularly and directly with the Ghana Country Manager and Ghana based staff as well as with external auditors.

The West Africa Accountant will:

•   Document financial transactions by entering account information into relevant accounting systems
•   Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
•   Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
•   Own and maintain petty cash ledgers and all related receipts and documentation.
•   Own the process around employment taxes, social security and all other payments (requires physical attendance).
•   Perform general office management as needed (postage, supplies, services)

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Bachelor Degree OR 3+ years relevant work experience/Advanced Degree in finance, accounting or related field
•   CPA equivalent license a plus
•   Must have background and knowledge of accounting standards in Ghana and other West African countries
•   Excellent organization, project management and administrative skills
•   Experience in non-profit finance, fund base accounting and reporting is a plus.
•   Proficient in Word, Excel and productivity tools such as Skype
•   Legal background and knowledge of legal standards in West Africa plus
