AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.

JOB POSTING : CHIEF SHORT-TERM PLANNING ENGINEER

ROLE PURPOSE
To build, develop, and lead an effective team capable of delivering industry leading practices within the mine planning & technical support functions in order to achieve business objectives/targets.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Act on all corrective actions assigned to him/her or under his/her jurisdiction and ensure timely completion.
• Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
• Report all incidents and ensure they have been investigated and corrective actions completed on time.
• Lead the short-term planning team to develop unequivocal mine planning data that are used as inputs to short-term planning.
• Be accountable for and oversee the development and implementation of the annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, 3 months Rolling and 7/21 weekly production plans and that all Mine Plans are timely, reliable, realistic and adhere to site and corporate requirements.
• Be accountable for month end reporting, ensuring reports are completed in a timely manner following all corporate requirements.
• Develop strategies to support the underground operations team to consistently achieve Mine Plans and demonstrate a sense of urgency to respond to production shortfalls and deliver on recovery plans.
• Review and analyse options to continuously improve designs (drill and blast and development layouts).
• Develop KPI’s to proactively monitor Mining performance, communicate production status, challenges and mitigation plans.
• Lead cross-functional teams to achieve production goals and continuous improvement.
• Evaluate mining growth projects as part of the life of mine planning processes.
• Be accountable for the strategic options planning.
• Collect and analyse production data to identify areas for improvement and cost savings.
• Map key internal stakeholder relationships and value with relevant management routines (communication, touchpoints, key meetings).
• Deliver the work of the Mine Planning function within approved budget targets and specified timeframes, costs and related KPIs.
• Provide senior technical leadership, and expertise to develop and enhance individual and team capabilities to consistently deliver the annual budget according to their role and level of authority.
• Recommend and optimize the approach for conducting specialist projects and research in the mine planning process and procedures.
• Establish a network of targeted stakeholder relationships to socializes initiatives and enhancements.
• Report on the development and progress of initiatives and enhancements of the mine planning function, to include outputs and befits obtained.
• Present solutions to specific problems with defined resolution methodologies and resources to deliver improved. performance in processes and procedures for improved mine planning.
• Pre-empt potential process or procedural problems arising within or from the Mine Planning domain through the implementation of
o Statistical controls (alert system),
o Improved work practices, procedures and processes
o Improved team knowledge and skills Reports on work programmes progression demonstrating.
• Optimise procedures within existing Mine Planning processes through the application of problem identification and resolution methodologies.
• Maintain consistent team performance and relationships within the function and cross-functionally within the department.
• Develop and maintain constructive relationships with Internal Stakeholders (Corporate, Group Planning & Technical, sister mines, etc.) and external Stakeholders (Regulatory Agencies and Authorities, Minerals Commission) to establish existing and changing societal and regulatory expectations and requirements.
Qualification Required & Experience
• BSc. Mining Engineering or its equivalent
Experience
• Over eight (8) years' proven experience in mine planning and production in an underground or open pit mining environment of which at least five (5) years is at senior supervisory level within a planning/technical department in an underground mine.
• In-depth experience of managing all aspects of mine engineering and production scheduling.
• Experience in underground drill and blast techniques.
• Experience in contractor management in large scale underground operations.
• Proficient with Mine Planning Software. Strong experience with Deswik or Datamine software is a must.
• Knowledge of a variety of mining methods applicable to the underground operations.

• Demonstrate knowledge in production management, tracking, mining dispatch systems, surveying, geology, contract management, drilling & blasting techniques;

• Demonstrate advance level of knowledge of planning systems and practices from long term to short term mine planning.
• Understands advanced principles of mine design including optimisation.
• Ability to generate and act as competent person for annual mine reserves statements.
• Understands the contract, the key deliverables, and the processes that are aligned to managing it successfully.
• Capable of having a direct role in managing an element of the contract management process.
• Can propose, draft, and analyse potential contract variations and amendments for approval by the contract manager.
