AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited, Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of the redevelopment phase to become a modern, efficient and long-term profitable operation. The underground mining operation has been fully mechanized and designed to produce up to an average maximum of 5,000 t/day of ore mined.
We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated person to join our dedicated team as per the details below:
POSITION: Cyanide Champion
OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
•Support the Redevelopment Project’s steady-state processing objectives by ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient management of cyanide across the Process Plant.
•Fulfil the legal requirement under LI 2182 Regulation 219 by acting as the appointed qualified person responsible for activities involving cyanide and cyanide products, aligned with the ICMI Cyanide Code.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
•Conduct critical controls reviews, supervisor workplace visits and inspections, positive/ hazards observation and reporting, and planned task observations.
•Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during execution; report all incidents and ensure investigations and corrective actions are completed on time.
•Act on all assigned corrective actions and ensure timely completion; achieve 100% compliance to set OHS KPIs for self and direct reports, targeting zero incidents and injuries.
•Be accountable for the team’s environmental obligations and performance; conduct formal meetings, identify and report weaknesses in procedures, and attend assigned environmental training.
•Investigate all environmental incidents in assigned areas and prepare reports with recommendations for the Departmental Manager for onward submission to the Environmental Manager or representative.
•Maintain and improve processing team safety performance; actively promote health, safety and environmental actions and housekeeping; ensure the correct PPE specifications for cyanide handling are available.
•Assist the training officer in training Process Plant employees in compliance with LI 2182 Regulation 219 and applicable codes; maintain a safe and healthy training environment per standards and legal regulations.
•Identify training needs and train employees per ICMI compliance requirements; compile, update and conduct plant induction training, especially cyanide awareness, and capture all training events in the learning management system.
•Facilitate pre- and post-cyanide training logistics, tracking and performance assessment; assist in implementing the training framework across business partners, suppliers and service providers; support upskilling across stakeholders.
•Serve as custodian of cyanide-related procedures and documentation; gather and maintain code compliance evidence and records on behalf of AGA STP.
•Coordinate processes and activities leading to maintenance of compliance and re-certification of AGA to the ICMI Cyanide Code; act as the Cyanide Code calendar owner.
•Act as the Cyanide Code conscience, continuously checking operational designs, activities and products for code compliance.
•Conduct inspections, audits and documentation reviews to ensure continuous compliance with the ICMI Cyanide Code and LI 2182 for gold processing plants using cyanide.
•Coordinate cyanide procurement and reception on behalf of AGA STP; serve as custodian of the AGA STP cyanide sparging facility.
•Report to the Senior Metallurgist on all cyanide-related issues, including stock movements and non-conformances, and follow through to resolution.
•Assist in developing and revising cyanide-related SOPs and other documents; ensure all cyanide-related instruments are operational and calibrated.
•Coordinate with community and sustainability stakeholders to support periodic community sensitization on cyanide use.
•Lead emergency response planning and activities for the Process Plant regarding cyanide and chemical exposure management.
•Evaluate the effectiveness of cyanide training materials and activities and implement reviews and improvements as required.
•Assist plant metallurgists in optimizing cyanide and lime consumption to achieve optimum gold recovery and neutralization and ensure compliance with ICMI and regulatory requirements for cyanide, arsenic and pH discharge to the TSF.
•Contribute to budgeting and cost control in the areas of the sparging facility and PPEs.
•Coordinate cross-functionally with other plant sections, department sections, Engineering, Health, Safety and Environmental departments, and Mining/Geology (e.g., crusher bin) including preparing equipment for maintenance or post-maintenance testing.
•Hold no managerial responsibility and no financial authority per the Delegation of Authority.
Qualification Required & Experience
Education & Qualification
•BSc Metallurgical, Chemical, Minerals, or Materials Engineering.
•Trainer certification in cyanide handling is an advantage.
•Basic First Aid knowledge and certification is an advantage.
Experience
•Minimum of two-year working experience in gold processing plant metallurgy.
•Experience with cyanide sparging, mixing and storage facility operations.
•Demonstrated ability and experience in teaching and training coordination in a gold process plant.
Knowledge & Skills
•Familiar with the ICMI Cyanide Code and certification.
•Adequate understanding of the science of unit processes in gold processing.
•Good computer skills.
•Good presentation skills.
•Ability to understand and appreciate hazards associated with cyanide and instruments used in handling cyanide.
•Good communication skills.
•Understands plant KPIs and metrics.
•Able to adhere to routine and time-sensitive, possibly repetitive tasks.
•Self-driven to achieve targets and improve the status quo; accountable.
•Conversant with the requirements of the Minerals and Mining Regulations, LI 2182, for processing plants that use cyanide.
