The University of Ghana was established in 1948 to provide higher education, undertake research, disseminate knowledge and to foster relationships with outside persons and bodies. It currently has a student population of over 38,000 to 5,000 employees (Basic Statistics, 2011)

Job Summary

The Institute of Continuing and Distance Education (ICDE) focuses on continuing professional development and lifelong learning opportunities for education, training and development of adults. The Institute offers students the flexibility of online learning to complete some of their coursework within specified timeframes to enable them balance their professional family and personal commitments.

Like any other department of the University of Ghana, ICDE performs three (3) main functions aimed at advancing Adult, Continuing, and Distance Education.

•  Teaching of courses leading to Diploma, BA, MA, M.Phil, PhD in Adult Education; MA/M.Phil in HIV and AIDS Management; MA in Distance Education and E-Learning
•  Conducting research across multidisciplinary social science areas
•  Embarking on community service in diverse ways which embrace non-formal education programmes in health, family life, community education, literacy, training for community improvement, public lectures, conferences, residential schools such as the Annual New Year School and Conference

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director (DE) is in charge of the University of Ghana's Distance Education Programme in the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education. Reporting to the Director, the Deputy Director:

•  Will assist the Director in providing administrative and academic leadership to the Institute regarding the Distance Education Programme
•  Is to ensure that the approved programmes and functions of the unit are carried out by members of the Institute
•  May be asked to act as Director during his absence
•  Is to carry out any other duties that may be assigned to him/her by the Director and the Vice-Chancellor

Qualification Required & Experience

•  A Ph.D in any of the following areas: Adult Education, Distance Education, E-Learning, Curriculum Development, Community Development, Educational Management and Administration
•  Capability to provide academic leadership, a vision and a drive to oversee the growth and development of the Institute, especially in the area of teaching, research and community service in the relevant disciplines
•  Evidence of managerial and administrative leadership of distance education systems including e-learning and other digital learning environments
•  A desire to teach in a distance education mode as he/she will be encouragged to develop online courses (web-based) and/or web-enhanced instruction
•  Analytical, computer, inter-personal and collegial skills
