Job Vacancy For Underwriting Manager

The successful candidate will be required to work closely with the marketing team, brokers, reinsurance and claims heads, to strike and maintain a balance between attracting and retaining customers through competitive insurance premiums and being able to cover any potential losses from claims.

The successful candidate will report directly to the company's Chief Operations Officer.


• Perform analytical review and risk analysis for underwriting decisions in accordance wth underwriting guidelines
• Support long and short-term business strategies through quality underwriting, customer service and production initiatives
• Responsible for the successful evaluation, documentation, selection, negotiation and pricing for assigned policies in order to ensure a profitable book of business
• Responsible for the leadership and management of a team of underwriters to achieve the company's production and quality goals
• Ensure endorsements, renewals and cancellations are reviewed and analysed in accodance with standards and guidelines
• Ensure operational excellence by providing input to improve processes and workflows
• Provide direction and support to the branches on underwriting matters
• Conduct Pre-Loss Surveys for policy enhancement
• Ensure effective management of value books
• Monitor critical areas, such as loss ratio, costs, retention ratio and new business hit ratio (the ratio of insurance quotes accepted to the total number issued), formulating corrective action where necessary
• Provide daily, weekly and monthly reporting as applicable to the Chief Operations Officer
• Assign work within the assigned team and collaborate with others as needed to ensure prompt and professional underwriting service is provided
• Mentor and guide less experienced underwriters within the organisation
• Work with other business units to support market penetration objectives and seek out cross-selling opportunities as appropriate
• Contribute to operational software maximisation
• Review of policies before year ends
• Liaise with all underwriters in all branches and any of our outlets
• Additional related duties may be assigned, as required

Qualification Required & Experience

• ACII qualified, technically sound in underwriting and a proven and demonstrate wealth of experience in underwriting
• Mature, aged 40 years plus and able to lead and train an enthusiastic team
• Computer literate, numerate, analytical skills and an eye for detail and the ability to handle a varied workload where the priorities are constantly changing
• Must possess at least 10 years experience in a similar role
• Ability to liaise with the Reinsurance Unit, Claims, Agency, Marketing and Accounts units
• Ability to lead and galvanise the team
• Must be on top of reinsurance, claims and marketing
• Should be able to interpret reinsurance treaty contracts
