The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is an international non-profit organisation working with diverse partners to develop agricultural solutions to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhance crop quality and productivity. and generate Wealth from agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. IITA is headquartered in Nigeria. with offices located in other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana.

The position:

•   IITA is recruiting for a Research Communication Specialist position for the Africa RISING project and the IITA-Tamale Office. Sixty per cent of the time of the successful candidate 'hill be directed specifically to the Africa RISING project in Ghana. and the remaining time to communications and advocacy for the IITA Ghana Country Office in general and other IITA-led projects based in the Tamale Office. She will work under the supervision of the IITA-Ghana Country Representative and Africa RISING Chief Scientist. and the Communication Specialist of the Africa RISING West Africa project.

Main Duties:

Work with, research teams and the Africa RISING Communication Specialist to:

•   Support production of and regularly updating publicity and outreach communication materials. including brochures. flyers. posters. videos and info graphics (as may be requested).
•   Document and communicate news. updates and success stories from IITA-Ghana. the Africa RISING and IITA-led projects based in the Tamale Office for wider dissemination in Ghana,Africa and globally.
•   Organise and manage information and knowledge outputs from the Africa RISING and other IITA-led projects based in the Tamale Office for wide access and application.
•   Publish and disseminate project results in various forms - print, digital. video or audio - and contribute these to the sharing platforms and tools established by the Africa RISING Programme.
•   Support and facilitate internal collaboration and communication across projects. This includes support for online tools. face to face meetings. workshops and facilitation as needed.
•   Organise and facilitate regular country Iearning meetings; bringing together partners of the Africa RISING and other IITA-led projects based in the Tamale Office.
•   Support networking and engagement activities with other actors in Ghana - as a specific contribution to the project's wider alignment and scaling objectives.
•   Provide outreach support at major;- events by organising displays, designing and producing posters, arranging booths. negotiating with suppliers. selecting and displaying publications. answering questions and arranging logistics.
•   Take lead in training and general capacity building of staff and partners on use of various communication tools and information platforms used by IITA (in general) and the Africa RISING and other liT A-led projects based in the Tamale Office.
•   Support the innovative use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and digital social platforms to promote collaboration and learning e.g. wiki, CG space,Flickr; Yammer.
•   Promote adherence to IITA and Africa RISING open access policies.
•   Develop and maintain good working relationships with the national media (newspapers. magazines. radio and television) in Ghana and mobilise them for public awareness events.
•   Support the entire process of documentation of all Africa RISING project research team meetings.
•   Provide any other communications-related support as may be requested by the IITA Country Representative.Afnca RISING West Africa Project Chief Scientist and the
•   Communication Specialist.

Duty Station: Tamale, with field work travels to project sites in Upper West. Upper East and Northern regions.

Terms of appointment: This is Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at IITA-Ghana's Tamale Office. Initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the possibility of renewal. contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Post-graduate degree (M.A, MSc or Post-graduate Diploma) in Communication, Knowledge Management. Journalism or related field from a recognised university.
•   At least 3-5 years relevant experience in development, research. corporate or international environment.
•   Ability to conceptualise. design and implement communication campaigns. strategies and programmes.
•   Very good knowledge of oral and Written English - 'he want a writer/communicator.
•   Communication and facilitation 'generalist' - editing,writing,policy communication, community engagement. Internet tools and skills. information management, process facilitation, reporting and administration.
•   Experience in horking with different national media.
•   Excellent knowledge of modern communication tools and approaches, and solid experience in knowledge management. including ICT and web 2.0 tools applications like wiki, Flickr, slideshare,Yammer,Youtube, Dropbox and blogging.
•   Self-starter able to Work to agreed priorities and deliverables.
•   Excellent interpersonal and networking skills in an international environment.
•   Good knowledge of the agricultural development scene, key actors etc. in Ghana is an advantage.
