Job Vacancy For Communication Specialist At Borderless Alliance (BA)

The Borderless Alliance (BA) , officially launched in May 2012 is a private sector initiative, which provides an independent, sub-regional platform for leading producers, traders, transporters and financiers to propose and advocate for systemic and practical improvements to the movement of goods, transport, capital and services across West Africa.

Borderless Alliance activities include trade and investment missions, policy seminars and advocacy programs, the provision of information and support services and promotion of dialogue with West African governments to create an enabling business environment for private enterprises. All these activities are structured along six strategic pillars as specified in the BA Strategic Plan 2013 – 2017:

•   Strengthening the capacity and institutional building of BA secretariat
•   Building a strong and diversified membership base
•   Gathering information, research and publications
•   Providing technical services to members
•   Advocacy and capacity building
•   Ensuring strategic communication

Ensuring strategic communication includes the development of strategic communication tools and materials to increase visibility and prominence of BA, regular dissemination of information to stakeholders, coordination of BA national and regional advocacy campaigns with those of other strategic partners and effective engagement with the media on national and regional levels.

The Communications specialist will be based in the Borderless Alliance Secretariat in Accra but will travel if required to complete specific tasks within the region. The Communications specialist will be employed full time for the period of the contract.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•   Develop and implement a BA communication strategy and marketing tools, including management of the BA Database
•   liaising with the IT Specialist in updating the BA website,
•   Development of monthly and quarterly newsletter, BA promotional material, information guides and communication materials for trade shows, industry conventions, conferences and social media platform.
•   Management of Borderless Magazine.

Internal Reporting and External Reporting

•   Editing of Trip reports
•   Editing of outgoing letters, press releases, etc.
•   Editing of BA reports (quarterly and annual reports, grant reports, etc.) as required

Management of Media Relations

•   Write and disseminate press releases to relevant media houses in the region.
•   Maintain contact and manage relations with key newspapers, TV and Radio stations and relevant magazines in the region.

Working Relationships:

•   The communications specialist will work in close collaboration with other members of the Borderless Alliance. She/he will report directly to the Executive Secretary of the BA.

Timing:

•   This assignment is expected to commence on December 1st 2013.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   BA/BSc Degree or Professional qualification with minimum 5 years relevant work experience or Master’s degree with minimum 2 years relevant work experience.
•   Excellent written/spoken French and English
•   Proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator would be added advantage.
•   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially in multicultural contexts; strong team player, networker and consensus builder.
•   Solid organizational skills; flexible and able to perform well under pressure in a fast paced environment.

Job Vacancy For Communication Specialist At International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) – Tamale

The Communication Specialist will work under the direction of the SARI Director with backstopping from the ATT Communication Specialist. She/he will be responsible for

•   Establishing a system for internal communication within SARI. This could be in the form of an intranet extension on the SARI website and/or regular internal newsletters keeping scientists abreast of ongoing work.
•   Document the ongoing research activities and make them available in a language understandable by the general public.
•   Maintain and update the SARI website.
•   Prepare and make ready for print four success stories per year on technology development, dissemination and adoption.
•   Work with local media (newspaper, radio, television) to make SARI and its research activities better known to the public at large.
•   Develop and make ready for print a quarterly newsletter intended for wide audience including NGOs, public sector etc.
•   Assist in the development of audiovisual materials such as presentations, posters, banners to be used by SARI scientists and management at key presentations.
•   Develop and maintain a photo library highlighting SARI research and technology development activities, key presentations and meetings etc.
•   Assist in the organization of key events such as conferences and workshops.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   The successful candidate will have a Msc in communication or related discipline and a proven track record as communication Specialist in a multi-disciplinary organization.
•   She/he will have a strong interest in biological sciences and a good understanding of agriculture and development issues is a plus.
•   S/he will be fully computer literate and able to master the full MS Office suite and publishing software.
•   S/he will be able to provide samples of success stories and other communication materials that s/he developed in the past.

Position Summary:
The Communications Specialist has the responsibility for developing and implementing a communications and outreach strategy that will help communicate project activities and achievements to USAID and other project stakeholders in Ghana.

Duties:

•  Develop a communications and outreach strategy aligned with IFDC’s overall communications strategy and approach. This includes a clear identification of key audiences, key messages to communicate and how the project will use different channels (videos, training programs, radio messages, etc.) to best reach those audiences.
•  Propose guidelines on the project’s working relationships with media (payment or not of the press, development and approval process for press releases, dissemination of press releases with media networks, etc.). Develop and ensure good working relationships with key media in the region.
•  Develop appropriate templates of standard tools for outreach and communications, including case studies, regular project briefs, standard presentations and others.
•  Develop and disseminate communications materials. These may include, but are not limited to:
1) Success stories
2) Newsletters and project-briefs
3) Fact sheets on technical achievements and lessons learned
4) Videos
5) Project brochures
6) Press releases
7) Regularly updated project website with appropriate content
•  Oversee maintenance of an email contact list (including media, client, partners, etc.) for the wide distribution and outreach of newsletters and other project materials.
•  Conduct interviews with project beneficiaries and field partners to gather information used in communications materials.
•  Oversee planning, scheduling, logistics and execution of sometimes complex communications events, such as conferences, speeches, briefings, etc.
•  Coordinate the tracking and cataloguing of media coverage of the project.
•  Assist the project leader and IFDC’s senior management in communicating project achievements to the media, field partners and the donor.
•  Upon request, edit the work of colleagues to professional written communication standards.
•  Train project staff in branding and marking requirements according to USAID requirements, and check compliance of all project documents with these requirements.
•  Build capacities of project staff (with support from a consultant if needed) in basics of photography, to improve the contribution of field staff in collecting illustrative pictures, and in writing skills, to improve reporting.
•  Recommend procedures for the Communications Specialist to work with the technical staff in order to obtain the inputs needed to develop effective communications and outreach outputs. These procedures should include proposals on sharing pictures and other bulky documents relevant to communications.
•  In liaison with IFDC’s division communication specialist and headquarters chief of communication, develop relevant materials for IFDC’s website and outreach documents.
•  Develop synergies with other IFDC projects/initiatives to highlight IFDC’s holistic approach to food security and agricultural development.

Supervision:
The Communications Specialist will be supervised by and report to the project COP.

Any other assignment that the supervisor deems necessary for the success of the project or contribution to the work of IFDC as a global institution.

Qualification Required & Experience

Qualifications:

•  University Degree in Communication, Journalism or related discipline;
•  Minimum of five years of relevant experience in journalism or public information and background in communication and one or more of the following areas: institutional capacity building, media, awareness creation and public dialogue.
•  Excellent knowledge of the MS Office software, email and of Internet (Web sites design is an asset);
•  Proficiency in English languages;
•  Ability to successfully perform multiple tasks;
•  Excellent analytical, writing, planning, communication, and facilitation skills;
•  Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;
•  Ability to work independently and to take initiative;
•  Ability and willingness to travel frequently.
