Job Summary

The position is for a geotechnical or civil engineer to join the Knight Piésold Team in Accra Ghana.  He/She will be reporting to the Engineering Manager and must be a senior or high level intermediate engineer with experience in the consultancy business.

Our business in West Africa is based mainly in the mining industry.  We specialise in tailings management. Outside our engineering office we have environmental and materials testing departments. Clients include, among others, Kinross, Golden Star and Goldfields.

Characteristics of the Candidate

He/She has to be recognised as a fully competent, emerging professional in all conventional aspects of geotechnical engineering.

•   Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
•   In particular experience with slope stability, earthworks specifications, foundations and materials testing are seen as assets as well as knowledge of tailings management.
•   Manages projects with significant budgets and complexity under the general direction of the Project Technical Director.
•   Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
•   Develops, approves and coordinates work schedules to meet project objectives.
•   Is making a contribution to sales through unaccompanied client visits and the co- ordination of major proposals.
•   Beginning to build a client base.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Typically, a manager of a number of projects.

•   Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of a moderate scope.
•   Performs work which involves conventional engineering and/or scientific problems and/or multi disciplinary design work that may include a variety of complex features.
•   Must be able to use relevant geotechnical software such as the Geo-slope package, Rift TD and others such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
•   Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in geotechnical engineering and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related specialities.
•   Analyses problems, organises investigations and experiments, evaluates and assesses results.
•   Actively being given projects to manage and delegating tasks both upwards and downwards within the company.
•   Seeks guidance when required.
•   Regular client contact with associated responsibility for client satisfaction and developing business and therefore revenue.
•   Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected.
•   Work is not generally supervised in detail and amount of supervision varies depending upon assignment.
•   Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

Qualification Required & Experience

Objectives

The African Natural Resources Centre (ANRC) is an entity of the African Development Bank established in 2014. The Center’s mandate is two-fold. Externally, it supports Regional Member Countries (RMCs) improve  development outcomes through effective management of natural resources wealth by delivering practical solutions on policy, legislative and investment decisions in the sector. Internally, it brings cohesion to the Bank’s activities in the sector by providing a single lens through which the institution views and tackles sector development opportunities and challenges. As and when the need arises, the Center also offers the lending arms of the Bank sector expertise support to improve delivery of country strategies and adds to the pipeline of investment opportunities.

The Center’s scope of work includes both renewable and non-renewable resource resources. The program of works focuses on capacity building for RMCs and covers policy advice, technical assistance, advocacy work and knowledge building. Program content is informed by the Bank’s Ten Year Strategy, the Center’s Strategy and Business Plan, demand form RMCs and partnership initiatives with regional and global organizations.

Duties and responsibilities

The primary purpose of this job is to lead the coordination of the delivery of advisory services to RMCs on mining sector policies, laws and institutional frameworks to build institutional and skills capacity of RMCs to regulate the sector. The scope will cover the mining sector. He or she will lead programs of advice to RMCs on policy, legal and institutional reforms as relate to regulatory issues. The incumbent will be the Center’s focal point in managing relations with consultants and institutional partners as well as relations with relevant arms of the Bank and regional governments. The incumbent will also lead advocacy initiatives and coordinate knowledge building programs in the stated areas of focus.

The incumbent will achieve this by;

•   Coordinating advisory work on mining regulatory matters, including policy, laws and institutional structures,
•   Lead the provision of strategic advice on mining projects negotiations between RMCs and investors,
•   Designing and supervising agreed work program delivered by experts providing specialist support,
•   Establishing global benchmarks for extractives licensing regimes
•   Maintaining a database of country profiles on policy, legal and institutional governance in the sector,
•   Collaborating with other Bank departments and think-tanks to benchmark policy formulation  in order to assist RMCs build institutional know-how,
•   Identifying potential areas of support to RMCs and by donors,
•   Identifying and forging partnerships with internal and external peers in the RMCs, RECs, industry and think-tanks,
•   Keeping abreast of international and regional conventions,
•   Advising the Director on relevant issues,
•   Managing all resources allocated to specific role.

Qualification Required & Experience

Including desirable skills, knowledge and experience

•   A minimum of a Master’s degree in the extractives policy, design or petroleum resources management or related disciplines,
•   At least 7 years relevant work experience in the sector, international organizations, regulatory environment or a Think-Tank with a focus in the sector,
•   Knowledge of the extractives sector regulatory environment, regional initiatives in the sector, AU development policies and relevant protocols.
•   Understanding of the generic mandate and functions of regulatory bodies and cadasters,
•   Practical knowledge of the various stages in the mining value chain,
•   Applied knowledge of at least one of the disciplines specified under qualifications,
•   Knowledge building skills including analytics, research project design and implementation,
•   Compiling funding proposals, policy briefs and project reports,
•   Knowledge of principles of good governance as pertaining to transnational trade,
•   Ability to interact with senior officials in the public and private sector,
•   Knowledge of influencers of public policy,
•   Capacity and ability to work independently to interact with senior executives at regional and international level,
•   Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English/French and a working knowledge of the other language,

Purpose of Role

Provide Technical Support to the Underground Operations Team and oversight to all Underground Mining activities. Edikan Gold Mine (EGM) has a current mining reserve of 3.3M oz of gold from a resource base of 4.3M oz. The Edikan processing facility has been designed as a 5.5Mtpa processing facility with the ability to expand this to 8Mtpa in the future. The plant is capable of producing at a rate of 220-270,000oz gold

Job Summary

The successful applicant will report to the Production Coordinator and will have the following responsibilities:

•   Handover of relevant shift/crew change information.
•   Ensure the gold room and gold recovery equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner and that maintenance tasks are carried out safely by authorised personnel.
•   Ensure that gold room personnel are working in a safe manner.
•   Regularly check on operating plant and equipment to ensure operating guidelines are achieved,
•   Ensure the required record keeping is accurate. Liaise with operations, metallurgy, commercial and security personnel to ensure the safety and security of the company’s product.
•   Ensure that security procedures are followed by all personnel entering the gold room.
•   Conduct regular face to face interview assessments with operators so they are aware of their development needs-Record their progress and needs for training in specific areas.
•   Coach, assess and record team member development progress and needs
•   Provide each Operator with a clear understanding of their job requirements and of company standards.
•   Operate in such a way that Operators learn by example to develop an attitude conducive to team cooperation and development.
•   Determine specific needs of individual Operators and prioritise these needs to provide focus for development
•   Build solid relationships with employees, management and union to achieve harmonious working relationship, and
•   Lead the gold room team in becoming increasingly compliant with site and corporate safety and environmental controls and regulations.
•   Take responsibility for ensuring safety and environmental standards are adhered to.
•   Supervise team members in proper recording and reporting of safety and environmental irregularities and incidents that occur.
•   Be aware of the sensitivity of relations with the community and how the mining community integrates into the local community.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Diploma (Metallurgy)
•   Supervisory Skills training is desirable 3-5 years experience in gold room operations utilizing electrowinning cells and smelting furnaces. Prior experience with Knelson concentrators, Acacia reactors, elution columns and carbon regeneration kilns.
•   Ability to speak read and write in English.

The Tarkwa Mine of Gold Fields Ghana Limited is seeking to engage the services of a self motivated individual for the position of a Community Affairs Superintendent to ensure that management systems, policies and procedures within the Community Affairs and Public Relations Department are in place and aligned to meet the short and long term demands of the company. The incumbent will also be expected to be mindful of applicable legislation and best practices and principles, with the ultimate goal and aim to supervise the department in a responsible manner.

Key responsibilities:

•   Supervise and Coordinate activities of staff of the department.
•   Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate community infrastructural projects.
•   Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate agribusiness projects to ensure return on investment.
•   Ensure that foundation activities receive good and effective publicity
•   Ensure that stakeholder engagement systems put in place are well managed to enable cordial relationship with traditional authorities, government, catchment communities, NGOs and the media at all times
•   Undertake budgetary controls
•   Supervise learning and development programmes in communities.
•   Supervise and coordinate the company’s land access and land management programs and policies.
•   Ensure the department complies with all Health and Safety, Cyanide Code and Environmental Standards.
•   Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly reports to the Community Affairs & PR Manager

Qualification Required & Experience

The appointee should have:

•   A recognized tertiary qualification in planning or Social Sciences, obtained from a recognized institution.
•   At least 5 years relevant experience in project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
•   Excellent communications skills in English and Akan as well as the ability to interact with people of diverse cultures and levels.
•   Strong organizational, facilitation and analytical skills.
•   Literacy in Microsoft Office products such as MS Word. Excel and Power point
•   Ability to work under pressure for long hours.
•   A valid and current light duty vehicle license and proficiency in driving a light vehicle.
•   Medical fitness for the job and environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for all electronic security management systems, processes, policies and resources provided in order to protect lives and assets of the company. Key responsibilities:

•   Assist in the formulation and implementation of all security policies/procedures, and ensure full compliance with Mining Regulations.
•   Ensure consistent improvement in security deliverables on the availability of all electronic security systems.
•   Initiate and monitor preventive and precautionary measures to stop criminal activities on the mine.
•   Assist with Performance Management, training and development of all employees in the department.
•   Provide advice to stakeholders based on intelligence gathered from investigations
•   Compile and submit monthly reports and review budget on monthly basis.
•   Ensure compliance with OHSAS 18001 and ISO I4001 requirements and standards

•   A minimum of five years relevant security experience at management level.
•   Comprehensive security knowledge and experience in mining operations.

•   Proven leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills with high level of integrity and the ability to interact with people of diverse cultures.
•   A high level of computer literacy in the use and application of MS Office
