The African Cashew Alliance was established in 2006 as an association of African and international businesses with an interest in promoting a globally competitive African cashew industry. Two million African farmers currently grow about 48% of the world’s cashews. The African cashew sector has become a highly visible contributor during the last 10 years. African smallholder farmers have more than doubled production. With a yield of more than one million tons of raw cashew nut (RCN) in 2013, Africa is now the world’s largest producer of RCN. While processing in Africa remains low, it is on the rise, growing from 35,000 MT in 2006 to 130,000 MT in 2013. It is estimated that a 25% increase in RCN processing within Africa would generate more than US$100 million in household income, improving the lives of many families in rural areas.

Job Description

The core duties and responsibilities of the PR and Communications Manager will be the following:

•   Head of ACA’s communications department, providing guidance and overseeing all activities under communications.
•   Liaise with the ACA Executive Committee and Advisory Board an prepare periodical reports, minutes, guidelines, etc. to the EC and Advisory Board
•   Supervise the development and implementation of internal and external communications and reporting, including developing ACA communication tools, such as website and newsletter.

The Government of Ghana was declared eligible for a poverty reduction grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (“MCC”), a United States Government Agency. In connection therewith, the Government submitted Concept Papers to MCC, and after a successful outcome of due diligence, and the availability of funds, has resulted in a Compact between the Government and MCC pursuant to which MCC would provide a five-year, multimiHion dollar poverty reduction grant to the Government of Ghana (a “Compact”). The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) will be responsible for the management of the implementation of the Compact. Subject to the terms and conditions of the Compact, related agreements, and the availability of funds, the Government intends to use a portion of the funds provided through the Compact to procure professional personnel in MiDA to assist the Government with the management and implementation of the Compact programme in a transparent, timely, effective, efficient, results-oriented and fiscally sound manner.

Job Description

•   Report to Communications and Outreach Director
•   Assist in the development and implementation of broad-based policies and plans to ensure meaningful community/public participation in planning, monitoring and evaluating the programme (the latter in coordination with the MiDA M&E and Economics Director). Collaborate with the M&E team to issue timely bulletins to stakeholders and target groups furnishing them with information about the programme.
•   Assist in the development and implementation of a private sector partner outreach strategy, in conjunction with the MiDA CEO and staff, including meetings and workshops in Ghana and the African region to both communicate private sector successes as well as publicise opportunities.
•   Assist the Communications and Outreach Director in coordination and collaboration with the ESP Director and the Director for Social and Gender Assessment on the planning and executing public consultations. Provide on-going communications and logistical support to the MiDA team in the consultation process (includes attending the consultative committee meetings).
•   Manage information dissemination efforts through collection of relevant data and updating the website (includes uploading meeting minutes) and preparing and editing the monthly information bulletin.
•   Act as media liaison-arranging press conferences, outreach to the media and the development and execution of a media plan. Monitor and liaise with the media to ensure that accurate information about the programme reach the public domain.
•   Promote and track action on MCC eligibility indicator performance.
•   Support GOG/MiDA relations by building, maintaining, and leveraging a good network of contacts to facilitate and/or promote the programme.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   University degree in Mass Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Business, Journalism or similar field with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant working experience in corporate communications, community and public outreach.
•   Knowledge of social and environmental impact assessment, gender issues, resettlement issues, group and public facilitation and in crafting and delivering messages to diverse stakeholders.
•   Advanced computer skills in email, Microsoft products, and the Internet.
•   Proven experience of working with the media in Ghana; ability to field media queues
•   Excellent organisational abilities including record keeping and familiarity with budgeting
•   Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Global Communities is seeking a Communications Officer for USAID-funded Resiliency in Northern Ghana (RING) program. The aim of the program is to improve the livelihoods and nutritional status of vulnerable households in targeted communities in the Northern Region of Ghana. Project activities will focus on increasing consumption of diverse quality foods, especially among women and children; improving behaviors related to nutrition and hygiene of women and young children; strengthening the capacity of local support networks (with a particular focus on Regional Coordinating Councils (RCC) and District Assembly (DA) staff and systems) to address the needs of vulnerable households.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Officer provides technical support for the program staff on the RING project by carrying out the following duties:

•   Coordinate all communications and media output of the project
•   Manage all external reporting and communications needs for key stakeholders and other high level visits to the program;
•   Supervise the work of assigned work group/team;
•   Act as first point of contact for PR and Media particularly in emergency situations;
•   Conduct regular visits to field offices and project sites as required, to evaluate communication priorities, provide support to regional officers, follow-up on current issues and assess the quality of reporting based on program realities.
•   Coordinate and distribute the RING events calendar, manage the production of the RING program website and submit regular updates for the RING international webpage on that region;
•   Take charge of the program branding and public relations strategies, success stories, pictures and videos.
•   Be responsible for the creation and implementation of the program’s media outreach strategy and will work closely with the Country press to ensure accurate coverage of programmatic activities.
